Soft, wholesome and homemade — the perfect bun for a delicious Kitchen Fairy burger.

Makes 8 buns

Ingredients

400 g whole-wheat flour

300 g lukewarm milk

14 g canola oil

1 large egg

21 g honey

9 g kosher salt

7 g instant yeast

Sesame seeds, for topping

For the egg wash

1 egg

1 tbsp water

Method

1. Start the dough

Add the lukewarm milk, honey and yeast to a bowl. Stir and leave for 5 minutes, until frothy. Whisk in the oil and egg.

2. Add the flour

Add the whole-wheat flour and salt. Mix until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

3. Knead

Knead for about 5 minutes. The dough should remain soft and slightly sticky. If it feels dry, add a little extra milk, 10 g at a time.

4. First rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and leave at room temperature for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.

5. Shape

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and divide into 8 equal pieces(105g). Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place seam-side down on a lined baking tray.

6. Second rise

Cover with a clean kitchen towel and leave for about 1 hour, until the buns are beautifully puffed.

7. Bake

Preheat the oven to 190°C / 375°F. Whisk together the egg and water and gently brush the tops of the buns. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Bake for 15–18 minutes, until golden brown.

Allow the buns to cool before slicing and serving.

✨ Kitchen Fairy Tip

🌾 The Flour I Used

For these burger buns, I chose Molensteen whole-wheat flour, a Dutch flour that I really enjoyed working with. I wanted to make these buns with 100% whole-wheat flour, giving them a more wholesome, rustic character while still keeping them soft enough for a homemade burger.

I love using good-quality, simple ingredients in my Kitchen Fairy kitchen, and this flour was a lovely choice for these buns. ✨

Kitchen Fairy tip: Whole-wheat flour can absorb quite a lot of liquid, so always look at the dough rather than adding flour automatically. You want a soft, slightly sticky dough — that's what helps create a tender bun.
